Back to school sales tax holiday

My 12-year old comes running to me yesterday and says, “Mom, we need to go buy our school supplies! Today is the last day to take advantage of the tax break!”.

I have to confess that I totally panicked because I thought I had missed it all together.  The truth is that the “Back-to-school sales tax holiday” is not over.  It started on  August 4, andschool_supplies.jpg will run to midnight, Monday, August 13, 2007.  Don’t you just love over-eager pre-teens???

The bill gives sales tax credit to:

  • Clothing and related items with a sales price of $50 or less
  • Books with a sales price of $50 or less
  • School supplies with a sales price of $10 or less

Governor Charlie Christ said the following about the sales tax holiday:

“Florida’s 2007 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday is Saturday, August 4, 2007, through Monday, August 13, 2007. I encourage all Florida families to prepare this week to help our children make the most of the new school year.

The sales tax holiday is a great way to save on clothing, books and school supplies. Books or clothing that sell for $50 or less and school supplies priced at $10 or less are exempt from sales tax. I am grateful to the Florida Legislature for continuing this great tradition in our state.”

The Miami Herald also published a great list of back-to-school events throughout South Florida – take a look at  List of back-to-school events.

You still have time – hurry and take advantage of the tax break – you have until Monday, August 13th!
